Are your dog bowls safe?

An often overlooked aspect of our pets health safety can lie in the food and water bowls that we use to feed them out of every single day.

You may see that fancy dog dish at our local store or online, but do you know if it’s actually safe to be using to eat out of? what could possibly be wrong with a bowl you ask?

Many ceramic glazes can contain lead, which can leach into the animals food and water. Some advertised as “lead free” have been known to test positive for lead. If you choose to use a ceramic serving dish, you want to make sure it specifically says lead-free, food-grade glaze!

Plastic Bowls can get scratched and trap bacteria, the plastics can leach BPA ((bisphenol-A)) and even “BPA free” dishes animals can pose allergic reactions to the animals.

Stainless steel the safest? guess again! although a food grade stainless 18/8,18/10 know as 304 can be safe, but most of the cheap inexpensive “stainless steel” bowls you run across are NOT food grade stainless!
If you choose to use a stainless steel dish, make sure its food grade 304 or 316.
And it should be noted, that some animals can develop rashes on their chins from eating out of stainless steel dishes.

Glass may be the safest of them all to use. Pyrex , which is a well known glassware company has been around for over 100 years. You can find an assortment of sizes to fit your food serving needs. It won’t carry any of the problematic issues of the above mentioned materials.
It should be noted, that if you choose glass to just be mindful of any potential breakage if your pet knocks the dish around. You should discard the dish if you notice any chips or cracks over time. And, If you use glass dishes outside just be mindful that the suns heat can be amplified like a magnifying glass and heat up the food if it’s left to sit for any extended amount of time.
