-A dog can die in as little as 6 minutes in a hot car-
I’m posting this only to bring awareness. We’re about to hit record setting hot temps in Chicago ourselves this week of July 2019. Some of the hottest temps in 7 years they say.
Every year we see the unfortunate news stories about dog’s dying in vehicles left unattended in hot weather. Almost every one of these cases the car is most likely left off, not running with no air conditioning. And some people may get the false sense of security that they can safely leave their dogs in their vehicle if they simply leave the vehicle running with the air conditioning on full blast. Most cars these days have a remote starter and can let the vehicle remain securely locked, unattended with the air conditioning running to keep the cabin at a comfortable temperature. Or some simply leave the car running with the keys in it – dumb idea- and use a second set of keys to lock the car while they leave the vehicle unattended. Sounds like a safe bet, right?
Wrong.
I’m going to give you examples of just what can go wrong in your vehicles air conditioning that many car owners simply never think of or just aren’t aware of.
A/C in cars work different than at your home. They rely on air movement/the car driving/ air being forced through the front of the vehicles grill, they rely on electric fans to draw this air in when they are not moving, electric fans can fail, they do fail, they are replaceable parts that are expected to fail at some point, The Freon gas which is what makes the air cold, in the A/C can run low and turn the compressor off without you knowing when the vehicle is unattended. There is a pressure sensor switch that tells the Air conditioners compressor when to run, if the freon gets low and that pressure drops the pressure switch tells the Compressor to disengage. The vehicles fuel pump could also go out and the engine will shut off. Are the odds of any of these happening very high? probably not. But guess what, I’ve had the low freon situation happen to me while my car was left running with the air on. So it CAN happen.
When I’m not busy helping dogs, I’m working on cars. I was approached by one of our local Police Departments a few years back to install remote starters on their fleet of K-9 Patrol vehicles so they could leave the vehicles running, secured, with the A/C running.
I simply turned down the jobs because I explained the risks. I could not put an animals life at risk no matter how little that risk.
I’ve worked on and around vehicles my entire life, I know things can go wrong and they do go wrong. things break all the time. Don’t trust an animals life in these situations there are too many variables on things to go wrong. It’s simply not worth it 🐾🐾🐯
