This question comes up over and over, and the people who perhaps had the most experience feeding ketogenic diets to dogs was Ketpet sanctuary in Texas. Not a single dog at that sanctuary that had cancer ate their meals cooked, and not a single dog in that program developed pancreatitis . Every single dog ate it raw. “KetoPet Sanctuary (KPS) open-enrolled 40 dogs with advanced cancer,”- ivcjournel.com
Every single dog that is the KDG (Ketogenic Dog Group) that has cancer eats these meals raw, my dog ate her meals raw with her cancer and after 2+ years of eating high fat raw ketogenic she has not developed pancreatitis either. cooking the meat increases the risk of pancreatitis and if you attempt to feed high fat in the presence of carbohydrates that poses a risk of pancreatitis.
People who have never had any experience feeding high fat are quick to offer their expert opinions stating that it is “bad” or “it will cause pancreatitis” , but most times often than not these people are voicing their opinions, not facts.
you will read other very popular opinions proclaiming that dogs with cancer can’t eat raw food, but do your own research and you will see that this is not true. As a matter of fact, some very prominent highly respected Vets actually encourage Raw feeding for dogs with cancer. I’m not going to name names, but do your own research and you will find who I am talking about.
As Dr.Becker states in the video below, the only time feeding raw to a sick dog is actually a problem is if the dog is so sick that the white blood cell count is wiped out. BUT, this is not to say that if a dog is undergoing chemo that raw is automatically an issue from my experience in observations. Many dogs in the KDG continued eating raw the entire time they were on chemo. Listen carefully to what she says about concurrent chemo treatments resulting in white blood cell count being depleted.
Now, on the other side of the coin some people simply say ” My dog WON’T eat raw” so I have to cook it. Well, from my own personal experience, transitioning an animal who has spent it’s entire life eating processed food (kibble) to raw, isn’t always an easy task. I have 2 dogs and 1 cat that I went through this with. 1 dog went from kibble to raw cold turkey no problem, she loved it! Other dog, my dog Emie who went through MCT cancer, the reason this website is here today, Took “okay” to raw at the beginning and then a few weeks in decided that she hated it, so I then had to use every tool in my arsenal to figure out how to get her back on track. Same thing with my Bengal Cat Leo, he was a kibble eater and would NOT take to raw, in fact I gave up a few times and finally I stuck with it and figured out how to outsmart him. complete details on what I did to get Leo to eat raw can be found HERE and more details on how I got Emie to eat Raw can be found on my Ketogenic Dog Group on facebook under the group files- tips and tricks for picky eaters. If you decide to join the group make sure you answer the 3 admittance questions to be approved!
And furthermore cooking the meat negates most of the reasons we want to be feeding raw in the first place.
“Heating or cooking food denatures its nutrients- Heating, processing or cooking breaks down vitamins and amino acids, producing undesirable cross-linkages in proteins, especially meat. When food is cooked, the following negative cause nutritional damage that gets worse as temperatures increase”:
- proteins coagulate
- high temperatures denature protein molecular structure leading to deficiency of some essential amino acids
- carbohydrates caramelize
- overly heated fats generate numerous carcinogens including acrolein, nitrosamines, hydrocarbons, and benzopyrene (one of the most potent cancer-causing agents known)
- natural fibers break down
- cellulose is completely changed from its natural condition: it loses its ability to sweep the alimentary canal clean
- 30% to 50% of vitamins and minerals are destroyed
- 100% of enzymes are damaged, the body’s enzyme potential is depleted which drains energy needed to maintain and repair tissue and organ systems, thereby shortening our life span
- pesticides are restructured into even more toxic compounds
- valuable oxygen is lost
- free radicals are produced
- cooked food pathogens enervate (weaken) the immune system
- heat degenerates nucleic acids and chlorophyll
- cooking causes inorganic mineral elements to enter the blood and circulate through the system, which settle in the arteries and veins, causing arteries to lose their pliability
- the body prematurely ages as this inorganic matter is deposited in various joints or accumulates within internal organs, including the heart valves.
