Featured KetoPoweredK9: Riley

” he’s got a new lease on life “

July 2021
Riley / 13 y/o weimaraner/ Hemangiosarcoma Diagnosis

From Riley’s owner Jessica:

Riley is our 13 year old weimaraner and I’ve had him since he was 5 weeks old. He’s my first “child” and we’ve been through so much together, I’d do anything for him. Even though he’s 13, he will always be my puppy.

We never really new about feeding our pups anything other than kibble, until a few years ago, when I heard about people making their own food for their pets. I remember thinking wow, they are really going above & beyond! All the while not realizing just how bad store bought dog food actually is for dogs! I always wanted to try feeding raw, because I’ve just wanted the very best for my pups, but each time I looked into it, I was so overwhelmed with how to make sure they got a balanced diet, I ended up more confused than when I started. So instead, I turned to researching what I thought to be the top of the line kibble/dehydrated food on the market and started him up on those, thinking I was doing the best thing for him next to feeding him a raw diet. And up until this point, he never had any serious health problems.

It wasn’t until June 2021, when we almost lost Riley, that I realized things needed to change, drastically, if we had any chance of prolonging Riley’s life. And I had no idea that what I was feeding, contributed to his health issues that were about to smack us in the face.

He just wasn’t acting himself one weekend, and overall looking back, he seemed to have “aged” a lot in a very short amount of time, it just almost seemed to hit him all at once, over the last 6 months or so. He wasn’t as active, his joints seemed to be bothering him/back end weakness, which he never really had issues with before. He just seemed so uncomfortable at times, and my thoughts were, it was just old age. I had no idea. If I had known then, what I know now- how much his diet affected his health, he would’ve been eating differently his entire life. I just didn’t know.
One night Riley came over to me, kind of trembled a bit and then just collapsed right there at my feet. My heart just dropped, and I’ll never forget his eyes as he looked at me right before he went down. He was letting me know, this isn’t good, mom. It literally floored, and I knew in that moment something was very wrong. He got right back up after a moment, but that was the first serious symptom I had seen him display. The next morning, he didn’t want to eat, gums were pale and he was extremely bloated. We got him to the vet as soon as we could, and they quickly saw upon ultrasound, a large mass on his spleen. He ended up having emergency surgery that day, removing a 6+ pound mass (the vet weighed it because it was so “impressive”), along with his splenectomy. He was extremely anemic, had to have blood transfusions before/during the surgery, but overall it was a success.

Riley came home the next day, even though he was noticeably sore, you could tell he felt better. We had no reason to believe his histopath results were going to be so devastating, the vet said as far as they could tell, all his other organs looked great. Unfortunately, one week after surgery, I got the call. It was bad. Hemangiosarcoma. Riley was officially diagnosed with cancer, and a very aggressive cancer at that. I was devastated, in shock, pissed, all of it. After a day or two of denial, I began my desperate search on the internet for help. Once again, diet was popping up as being the one thing that has proven to help other dogs in these extreme diagnoses.

Fortunately for me, I also stumbled upon Mike’s website-ketopoweredk9.com. FINALLY, someone who can literally walk you through how to feed raw meals to your dog. And not only that, raw meals, catered to your individual dog’s needs, supplements and all. With recipes. AND, has first hand experience & proof that he’s on to something great, with his beautiful pup, Emie’s story. It was exactly what i was looking for. I needed help, and I found it. Hes got so much info on his website, its mind-blowing. With all of the emotions I was going through at the time, the amount of information there is on how to start feeding raw on your own, its astronomical and overwhelming.
Mike takes that stress out of the equation for you. We are SO grateful.

Riley has been on his new Raw Ketogenic Diet for almost a month now and is doing absolutely fantastic! We noticed he seemed to be feeling a little better just after his surgery alone. But since starting him on a Raw properly balanced Ketogenic Diet, hes got a new lease on life. He runs around like he’s a puppy, super excited for walks again, LOVES mealtime, playful with visitors-who comment on what a change they see in his behavior, his coat has even changed-its so soft. You can tell, overall he just feels so much better. And we feel so much better knowing that we are doing everything we possibly can be doing to help him in his situation.

Now more than ever, we cherish each new day we get to spend with Riley. And we too hope he gets to be one of the success stories, just like Emie.”

Jessica-

MY THOUGHTS:

All of Riley’s improvements are “par for the course” so to speak when we start a dog on a properly balanced Raw ketogenic meal plan. Suddenly acting young again, loves the meals, playful, change in coat/fur. You can always tell a raw fed dog or cat just by petting them and running your fingers through their hair. A raw fed animals coat is always a tell tale sign!

And Riley is a PRIME example that it’s NEVER too late to change and improve a dogs diet. A lot of pet owners might be apprehensive about making such drastic changes to a 13 year old dogs diet, but Jessica made that drastic change and improvements followed.
