Ketogenic Diet to Combat Seizures

Levi started having seizures at just 2.5 years old. After traditional treatments of phenobarbital and CBD weren’t working to stop the seizures, Levi’s owner reached out for help designing a balanced Raw Ketogenic diet. After acclimating to the Balanced Raw Ketogenic diet, Levi’s seizures have since stopped. Time will tell if Levi has any more episodes, but as of right now Levi’s owner is optimistic that we’ve been able to hold them at bay with the diet.  As I write this post, Levi is at about 9 weeks without having any seizures.
I will keep this page updated with Levi’s progress as time goes on!

what Levi’s owner has to say :
My Levi started having seizures. He’s an 8 lb Japanese Chin cross and he is my rally obedience star. He loves to train. But at just about 2.5 years of age he had his first seizure. then 6 months later, another, quite long. Then they started coming every 2 months …then monthly. We put him on phenobarbital ( regular vet) plus CBD oil (holistic vet) … back to 2 months for another half year. and then a series in November and December of 2019. In January of 2020, he went onto the ketopet diet and things calmed down a bit… I got him onto a diet designed by Mike at KetopoweredK9 by the first week of February. He had 2 seizures in March… another in April… and the he went 8 weeks without a seizure. I am thinking that it took some time for the keto process to affect whatever causes his seizures, but the long times between the last 2 seizures have me hopeful that we have at least arrested the increasing frequency of seizures.
Thank you for your help and for designing that diet for him”

My thoughts: Although Levi started on a basic unbalanced version of a ketogenic diet back in January and still had some episodes, I would account this to the fact that the Keto diet he was started on back then was too low of a ratio at just 1:1, After Levi’s owner contacted me to get a properly balanced Raw Ketogenic meal plan together, we got a plan going to increase the ketogenic ratio to a higher fat 2:1 ratio and after Levi had time to acclimate to that new diet is when we began to see the changes and subsequently began to see the seizures stop.  This is a perfect example of how not all ketogenic diets are the same, how they can be specific to the ailment. And a great example of an owners perseverance to keep on trying

nico Anne Chen osteosarcoma
Success with Keto!

Nico is a 13 year old pit bull mix Diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in Feb of 2020, When her owner came to me for help formulating a balanced ketogenic Meal for Nico she reported that Nico used to be fairly active but since the Osteosarcoma Diagnosis she was forced to take Nico on shorter walks and generally was less active. We started Nico on a balanced Raw Ketogenic Diet, 2:1 ratio shortly after the initial diagnosis. Here’s what Nico’ owner has to say a few months later after implementing the Raw Ketogenic diet.

“My 13 year old pup Nico was diagnosed with osteosarcoma after an xray confirmed that as the reason for her pronounced limp. As she is very fearful of the vet, amputation and chemotherapy would not have been a good option for her. I started her on a 2:1 recipe provided by Mike very soon after. In three weeks, the large bump in her shoulder had almost disappeared (it’s still there but you have to know it is there to see it) and the limp is gone. She loves the raw keto diet and licks her bowl clean. It has been 3 1/2 months since her diagnosis (in February 2020) and she is running and staying active. She continues to enjoy her walks and hikes and I am just so thrilled with what really seems to be her general good health and the positive response to the keto diet. Thank you so much!!!”

My thoughts:

Nico was eating a highly processed diet of kibble prior to starting the Raw Ketogenic Diet. Stories like this are not uncommon for us to see remarkable results of improved health in a very short time. When the body has the right food it needs, we can see vast improvements in the dogs health!

Combating Chemo induced Nausea/Appetite loss

ginger-on-wood-texture-royalty-free-image-801035860-1532725625

This tip has worked wonders for MANY group members dogs in the Ketogenic Dog Group on Facebook!

If your dog is dealing with Chemo/nausea/not wanting to eat, this tip comes in from a fellow group member who Dealt with these issues and figured out a way to deal with it that worked well for them even when standard prescribed drugs failed to gain appetite back.
“Nausea is one of the side effects of chemotherapy and dogs will inevitably go on hunger strikes. My Isis sure did. Her Oncologist would prescribe *Cerenia* but that didn’t help at all. I make a ginger root tea for Isis. I boil a 1/4 cup of water. While that is boiling, I peel and slice 2 small slices of fresh ginger root. Once the water boils, I drop in the ginger in the water, take it off the stove and let it steep for 5 minutes. I then take ginger out of water and test the tea for hotness. How I test it is I get a dropper and take some of the tea and put drops of it on my wrist till it’s just lukewarm. Then I take a tablespoon of the tea and give it to Isis. I do this morning and night for 3-5 days after IV chemo. For nausea side effect for Oral chemo I give her a tablespoon of ginger root tea in the evening on a daily basis. Works like a charm for her.”
