When someone hears that some of the ketongenic diets we are using “contain 80% fat” one may envision a dogs bowl with 80% of the entire meal containing fat/lard/butter/oil etc.

Recently I had a conversation with a person inquiring about a Raw Ketogenic diet for their dog and they had made a comment about being concerned that 80% of their dogs meal would be fat. But let’s look at exactly what this 80% means.
In the case of a 2:1 ketogenic ratio meal, 80% of the meals CALORIES are coming from fat. This is different than 80% of the physical amount of the entire meal. Remember, fat contains double the amount of calories compared to protein or carbohydrates. And if we look at a 1:1 ketogenic ratio meal we could expect approximately 70% of the meals calories coming from fat. And if we were to look at a more “traditional Raw Diet” we may only expect to see around 50% of meals calories coming from fat.
Remember! the Ketogenic ratio of a meal is referring to the ratio of Fat vs. Protein + NET carbohydrates
And net carbohydrates are : Carbohydrates – Fiber = Net Carbohydrate
So if we were to break down a 2:1 Raw Ketogenic Meal for a dog and actually looked at the physical amounts of food being used in the meal, we may expect to find approx 66% of the entire meal consisting of MEAT, 14% of the meal consisting of pure fat (coconut oil being the most common), 15% of the meal consisting of vegetable matter- low glycemic fibrous vegetables only, and the remaining 5% of the meal consisting of various odds and ends required to properly balance out the meal to ensure all of the nutrient requirements are being met for a canine.
This is a big difference than a wrongly perceived idea that 80% of the meal must be fat

And we also have to remember that a 2:1 Ketogenic ratio would be reserved for Dogs that are dealing with ailments such as Cancer, or epilepsy for example. We would not be using 2:1 ratios for an otherwise healthy dog.
A 1:1 ketogenic ratio would be appropriate for a general maintenance diet, and we also use 1:1 ratios to take “breaks” from 2:1 and punch up our nutrient intake.
So after I had explained all of this to the person inquiring about a Ketogenic Diet for their dog, it all made a bit more sense to them.
They had been envisioning that their dogs bowl would basically be consisting of nothing more than fat, but as we can now see, this is not the case.
