ARE YOU USING ONE OF THESE POPULAR FLEA AND TICK MEDS FOR YOUR DOG OR CAT?
It’s very important info for any animal owner who is not aware of the seriousness of these drugs. I also included a link to a recent article from Dr. Jean Dodds on the topic and I also included a link to the FB group “does bravecto kill dogs” yes- it’s a shocking name for a group, but if you start reading the stories you will quickly understand why . That group has extensive info in their group files related to these drugs.
A group member in my Ketogenic Dog Group posted yesterday that her dog started having seizures after her dog was given Nexgard, I felt this was prudent to post today so people become more aware of the severe dangers of these flea and tick meds. The FDA released warnings in 2018 but it appears that these warnings are only included in the USA and Canada, but these drugs are sold worldwide. But in all reality, unless you really stay on top of this stuff in the “pet world”, the average pet owner may have NO idea about stuff like this
Bravecto (fluralaner), Bravecto Plus (fluralaner and moxidectin) topical solution for cats,Nexgard, Bravecto 1-month (fluralaner) tablets for cats, Nexgard (afoxalaner) tablets for dogs,Simparica, Simparica Trio (sarolaner, moxidectin and pyrantel) tablets for dogs, Credelio- (lotilaner) tablets for dogs and cats, and Revolution Plus (selamectin and sarolaner) topical solution for cats are all on the list of drugs which can cause severe medical issues in dogs, including:
- Seizures
- Tremors
- Ataxia
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Loss of appetite
- Skin irritations
- Lethargy
flea and tick meds contain a Isoxazoline class of medication and that drug goes into the dogs bloodstream, when the ticks or fleas bite the host animal (dog or cat) and start ingesting the blood that now has Isoxazoline in it, the Isoxazoline paralyzes and kills the fleas and ticks. We are basically putting a “pesticide” into our dogs blood to kill the bugs. How any of these drugs could even be approved in the first place boggles the mind ………
Here is the link for the FDA warning about these drugs https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/animal-health-literacy/fact-sheet-pet-owners-and-veterinarians-about-potential-adverse-events-associated-isoxazoline-flea
Now, if you’re using a product that is NOT on this list you may be saying to yourself, phew! glad I dodged that bullet! BUT , it’s important to point out that even if the product you are using did not fall on this list, we have to still consider what kind of potential implications these popular medications and collars impose on our beloved animals health. Other VERY popular flea and tick collars include the chemical pesticides/insecticides Flumethrin and Imidacloprid. These products work by seeping into your pets fur, hair, skin and killing off the insects when they ingest the chemical. Think about this carefully, the insects are dying because they are being poisoned by a chemical pesticide in your animals blood and skin. Does this sound like any product you would wear around your neck? probably not. Flumethrin and Imidacloprid are in the neonicotinoid-based class of pesticides, which are under extreme scrutiny for their use on crops , Europe and Canada have imposed bans on these insecticides.
Do your research and know the potential implications of the chemicals being used in your pets flea and tick medications/collars/topical treatments. And assess if your pet even needs any flea/tick treatments in the first place?
A lot of times pets are being treated for something they don’t even have or have minimal risk of getting. Does your average dog who takes the occasional walk to the park have a very high risk of picking up ticks? probably not. I personally frequent the forest preserve at least 75% of the days in a month with my dog running through brush/tall grass/wooded areas etc., Do I sometimes find ticks on her? yes, I simply remove them and go on with our lives. Do I treat her for fleas she doesn’t have? no.
Consider using a safer alternative to these toxic chemicals. A product called Wondercide is the only thing I will use on my animals.
