What is BCS?

BCS, is Body Condition Score. It’s a way to determine how fit/lean or overweight/obese your dog may be. This is crucial in our animal’s health it is often either overlooked or misjudged.

Many dog owners may not know what a fit dog actually looks like because unfortunately, we are usually used to seeing most dog’s overweight. And many people may label a fit dog as “too skinny” when in fact they are optimal weight.

A whopping 59% of cats and 54% of dogs in the U.S. are classified as overweight or obese, according to October 2016 research conducted by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP)

Keeping a dog at a healthy lean weight is CRUCIAL to their long-term health.

Despite old ways of thinking, we do not want to “plump up” a dog with cancer in an effort to “fight cancer” this couldn’t be any further from what we really want to do which is maintain the absolute leanest, healthy, body mass. and in order to do this, one must be able to accurately gauge their dogs BCS score. And this not only goes for dogs dealing with cancer, but this also goes for EVERY dog. Maintaining a LEAN healthy body weight is absolutely crucial to their overall health.

Through our endeavor, I was able to shave a whopping 17lbs off of my dog when we switched from kibble to Raw Keto. At the time, I never thought my dog was overweight as that was just the way I was used to seeing her that way. Below is a picture of her now after that dramatic weight loss. My only regret is not purchasing one of these many, many years ago. Gone are the days of struggling to hold my dog and stand on my home scale and then subtracting my body weight to determine her weight. And gone are the days of making a special trip to your vets office or local pet store to use their scale.
