Here are some real-world examples from members of the Ketogenic Dog Group on Facebook that have seen positive results with implementing a Raw fed Ketogenic Diet for their dog. We the pet owners must be our dog’s advocate for their health. These are all real-world examples of pet owners taking the initiative to make a positive change in their dogs diet and health. Whether your dog is suffering with Cancer, diabetes, obesity, epilepsy, arthritis, heart conditions, IBD, allergies, yeast , a Change in their diet can make all the difference in the world. Something as basic and simple as the food that goes into their bodies can make a remarkable difference in their lives. A bad or wrong diet will ALWAYS cause problems. Feeding a proper diet is the very first step in achieving optimal health. After all, the body can only function as well as the “fuel” it receives. This website makes no claims of curing cancer, sadly there is no cure. Many of these dogs featured on this page sadly lost their battle with their cancers. But the one thing that they all shared in common is that their quality of life was improved, usually significantly while on a Raw Ketogenic diet. These dogs were able to live their lives WITH their disease. For help with custom formulated ketogenic diets for your dog, checkout the meal plan program which is the only system of its kind.

If you wish to have your Dog’s story added to this page please email me. This can be a great source of inspiration and hope for other’s whose dogs may be suffering from health issues, for them to see that there can be hope even if the prognosis looks bleak and although diet alone can not always save our animals, in almost ever single observational case it drastically improves their quality of life!

Winter

Epilepsy
From Winters human companion: “My husband and I both have been so happy with the improvements she’s already seen in such a short period. So thankful I came across your group on Facebook! Before starting keto she was having seizures every 7 days and we recently went 13 days without them and her recovery was so quick. She didn’t have any vision issues afterwards and she recalled who we were and where she was afterwards. While we would like to see the seizures disappear completely we think that’s a huge success in such a short window of time. She also has been walking 1.5 to 2 miles daily. Something she hasn’t had the energy to do in over a year. She’s been excited to go on a nightly walk with me now.
She’s a double Merle Australian Shepherd who is completely deaf and partially blind. She was dropped off at a vet to be euthanized because she was “flawed”. She’s made such a difference in our lives that we recently rescued another pup like her”.

My thoughts: By simply altering the food she was eating, re-proportioning the macro-nutrients which constitute a Ketogenic diet, Winter’s episodes were greatly improved upon in a very short amount of time after signing up for our Ketogenic meal plan program AND on top of that , Winter has a newfound energy to improve her daily quality of life to get out and be more active. We continue to keep our fingers crossed for more improvements! It is quite amazing to see how food can can make such a drastic difference in an animals life. By simply using the right amounts of food in a properly formulated ketogenic diet can sometimes have a profound effect on epilepsy conditions.

Kolby

thumbnail_IMG_8009

Kolby is a 10 year old male golden doodle who was diagnosed with inoperable sarcoma in his upper jaw. The prognosis was 1 week to1 month.

From Kolby’s human companion:

So after receiving a diagnosis of inoperable jaw tumor with a potential time frame of one week to a month, I was devastated. My 10 year old golden doodle has been the best friend I’ve ever had.

I belong to a Cleveland Ohio doodle group, where someone recommended this group (ketogenic dog group on Facebook) and the raw keto diet. This person has since become a new best friend ❤️

After staring the diet I wanted to share a video of Kolby with his furry brothers. He has gained 20 pounds and has more energy now than ever.

We are going on 5.5 months post diagnosis. I am so grateful for each day we have with him.

Kolby is the big furry polar bear! A lot of prayers, positivity and hope has brought us here.

My thoughts: like the countless examples below on this page, with a properly fed home prepared ketogenic diet we often see some amazing improvements in dogs like Kolby.

Shiva

SHIVA

AGE:

Shiva’s story from her human companion Sonia:
“Our girl Shiva was diagnosed with advanced stage multi-centric lymphoma back in July 2020, at the age of 10 and a half. I never thought this would happen to us and, as devastated as we were, we did our best to research available options. We decided to go with the CHOP chemotherapy protocol, which she completed with success and was in remission for a solid 6 months after finishing. Unfortunately, she suffered a bad tooth infection and the cancer promptly returned… This is when we decided to look more into keto for Shiva, since we’re doing keto ourselves (with great results). On top of it, she didn’t want cooked food anymore, and only would eat raw with appetite, so we finally decided to transition her to a raw keto diet. We fully implemented the new regimen shortly after she started her second CHOP protocol and she’s been doing fantastic since. She is much more alert and energetic, and she looks better now than she did before initially getting sick, back in 2020. She’s not getting much side effects from chemo, which she had before, like stiffness, pain in the legs, etc; and, we’re thrilled with the results and cannot wait to see where this journey takes her. We also can’t thank Mike enough for all his help and helping us work Shiva into her new keto diet. It’s so amazing that we’re even starting our other elderly dog (Spike) on it. Thanks, Mike!”

The picture is of Spike (left) and Shiva (right), both on keto, getting ready to go on a run! 🙂
Thanks again and have a great day!
-Sonia

MY THOUGHTS: Once again, as we’ve seen time and time again, we can see astounding results from a properly fed Ketogenic diet. And, it’s important to point out Sonia mentioned that we started her elderly dog Spike on a Raw ketogenic diet, it is NEVER too late to change and improve your dog’s diet!

CoCo

15 year old Labrador Male.
Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis, his owner stated that he was collapsing, having bleeds, and seizures regularly- At his peak, having 4 seizures in 24 hours.
Location: US Virgin Islands
UPDATE 11/30/2021 Coco’s owner reports he is still doing well

From Coco’s Owner: “CoCo is doing fantastic. Energized, goes up and down steep stairs with no problem, swims a mile three times a week, huge appetite, and just overall great lifestyle. Since July 12th he has not had a seizure of any collapses or bleeds.
All is well Mike Thank you again for everything.”
Christian & CoCo

My Thoughts: Just over 2 months on a custom formulated Raw keto diet and CoCo has a new lease on life right now. No seizures in 2 months since starting the diet, no bleeds, increased energy and is working out twice a day with his owner and literally doing 1 mile swims 3x a week. I know dogs half his age, that are healthy, that can’t even do that! It’s never too late to improve a dogs diet, we never know what will happen unless we try! And no matter what’s wrong with the dog, changing and improving the diet is always step one.

August 2021
Rainey/ 9 y/o Golden Retriever/ Osteosarcoma Dx May 2021
Location: USAFrom Rainey’s owner Malori:

In 2012, I got Rainey as a puppy my senior year of college. There wasn’t a place in the world I would go without her. She has been my best friend, sister, daughter, soul mate, and ultimate companion wrapped into one from the first embrace.

In early 2021, she developed a slight lameness in her right leg, leading me to think she tore her other ACL ( In 2020, she had a TPLO ACL procedure on her left rear leg). A few months later she let out a big yelp and was holding her leg up to her abdomen without even an attempt to lower it. We scheduled her examination and surgery date for another TPLO ACL procedure. During the examination, the doctor asked to get x-rays because it didn’t feel like a tear. And just as he suspected, the bone looked as if it had been eaten away by moths–more than likely Osteosarcoma (OSA) in her knee. He gave us all of our options and we left so confused about which path to take for our girl.

After overcoming a lot of pain and sadness, my head started to clear and I began my research. I was first led to a series called ‘The Cancer Series’ where I learned a ton about raw keto diets making a huge impact on slowing/stopping/shrinking cancer growth. The series discussed ‘The Keto Pet Sanctuary’ outside of Austin, and the techniques they used to increase the odds of remission in 50% of their dogs with cancer. I went to their Facebook page and was directed multiple times to Mike and his facebook group, Ketogenic Dog Group.

After much debate and seeing dogs thrive with three legs on bone cancer Facebook groups, we decided to move forward with the amputation (2 weeks after the x-ray). The biopsy confirmed it was Osteosarcoma, and two weeks after surgery her lungs were still clear of metastasis. At that point, she was still a textbook case, statistics-wise.

We started her on what we thought was an easy and accurate home prepared keto diet about a week after her diagnosis. We watched the ‘how-to’ videos on The Cancer Series and considered using the Keto Pet Sanctuary Keto Calculator to formulate her meals at home. During our decision period, we bought her frozen keto marketed raw food from a local pet store and tried to tamper with her macronutrient ratios ourselves by reducing portions and adding fat. In my gut, I knew this didn’t feel right, and worried that we weren’t getting her into ketosis or she was missing important nutrients.

In mid-June, I decided to move forward with a custom meal plan for Rainey from Mike with his Custom Meal Plan Program.  Rainey is my child and I needed to feed her like I fed my human child–with fresh, prepared meals. It was my responsibility as a loving pet owner. I needed peace of mind knowing that a professional had taken the time to do the proper research, had the experience and passion in developing these meals. I really challenged Mike with my screening questions and concerns, and he understood how it felt in my shoes since he had been there before. He has dedicated his life to give his dog, Emie, the best life; and I had to trust his story and that the keto diet is what led me down this path in the first place.

I’ve never looked back. His website taught me how to make the food, and he even provided links to specific supplements to give even more peace of mind on brand quality, dosage, etc. Rainey’s coat is so soft, she feels so good and playful, and is so excited to eat her delicious home-prepared meals. Around the same time, we decided to move forward with chemo to give the diet more time to provide additional benefits. She has handed both rounds of chemo so far without any issues and minimal side effects (slight drop in WBCC). Mike frequently checks in with Rainey, her diet, ketone/glucose levels, and gives advice along the way. It is so nice and comforting knowing someone is in this journey with me–it makes this scary disease feel less lonely to talk it out with someone and get some direction. We plan on moving her brother, Wilson, to a 1:1 diet formulated by Mike once we get Rainey through her chemo treatments.

We are now almost three months past diagnosis, and she is still metastasis free and handling her chemo well. I will keep you guys posted on Rainey’s journey along the way!

MY THOUGHTS:

Once again we see the improvements of a dog fed a properly formulated raw Ketogenic Diet. And, it’s important to point out , as her story explains, a raw ketogenic diet was used in conjunction with standard of care chemotherapy treatments. Despite the unsubstantiated claims from many, that dogs with cancer “can’t” eat a raw diet, and dogs undergoing chemo “can’t” eat raw food, this couldn’t be any further from the truth. If there’s any one time a dog needs the absolute best nutrition possible, its when they are undergoing these circumstances. And as countless others have learned, getting a dog in ketosis WHILE undergoing chemo can help mitigate chemos side effects. And research is showing that ketosis can help enhance chemos efficacy. The two work in tandem . Join the ketogenic dog group on facebook and you can read countless stories from other pet parents who did in fact, feed a raw diet while undergoing chemo. In the over 4 years of our groups existence, with countless pets feeding a raw keto diet while undergoing chemo, not once have we ever had a member report any complications of feeding raw while on chemo.
And as Malori also pointed out, trying to do your own “make shift” keto diets by yourself at home can be a very daunting task to say the least. These diets take a lot of attention to detail to ensure that every single “box” is checked to ensure that the dog is getting all the proper nutrients they need.  A high fat keto diet by default, makes this a very challenging feat to achieve. The Meal plan program I’ve put together takes the guess work out of all of this for the pet owner. In order for these diets to have a chance to be effective, they have to be done right with nothing left to second guess.

Keep up the great work Malori!

Riley / 13 y/o weimaraner/ Hemangiosarcoma Diagnosis

Most recent update: November 12, 2021
: “Hey Mike! Just wanted to touch base with you, Riley was first diagnosed June 1st, 2021 with Hemangiosarcoma. We are so happy to announce that he has been absolutely thriving ever since changing to your diet! Thanks so much for providing the services that you do. It has truly been a miraculous journey”From Riley’s owner Jessica:
Riley is our 13 year old weimaraner and I’ve had him since he was 5 weeks old. He’s my first “child” and we’ve been through so much together, I’d do anything for him. Even though he’s 13, he will always be my puppy.

We never really new about feeding our pups anything other than kibble, until a few years ago, when I heard about people making their own food for their pets. I remember thinking wow, they are really going above & beyond! All the while not realizing just how bad store bought dog food actually is for dogs! I always wanted to try feeding raw, because I’ve just wanted the very best for my pups, but each time I looked into it, I was so overwhelmed with how to make sure they got a balanced diet, I ended up more confused than when I started. So instead, I turned to researching what I thought to be the top of the line kibble/dehydrated food on the market and started him up on those, thinking I was doing the best thing for him next to feeding him a raw diet. And up until this point, he never had any serious health problems.

It wasn’t until June 2021, when we almost lost Riley, that I realized things needed to change, drastically, if we had any chance of prolonging Riley’s life. And I had no idea that what I was feeding, contributed to his health issues that were about to smack us in the face.

He just wasn’t acting himself one weekend, and overall looking back, he seemed to have “aged” a lot in a very short amount of time, it just almost seemed to hit him all at once, over the last 6 months or so. He wasn’t as active, his joints seemed to be bothering him/back end weakness, which he never really had issues with before. He just seemed so uncomfortable at times, and my thoughts were, it was just old age. I had no idea. If I had known then, what I know now- how much his diet affected his health, he would’ve been eating differently his entire life. I just didn’t know.
One night Riley came over to me, kind of trembled a bit and then just collapsed right there at my feet. My heart just dropped, and I’ll never forget his eyes as he looked at me right before he went down. He was letting me know, this isn’t good, mom. It literally floored, and I knew in that moment something was very wrong. He got right back up after a moment, but that was the first serious symptom I had seen him display. The next morning, he didn’t want to eat, gums were pale and he was extremely bloated. We got him to the vet as soon as we could, and they quickly saw upon ultrasound, a large mass on his spleen. He ended up having emergency surgery that day, removing a 6+ pound mass (the vet weighed it because it was so “impressive”), along with his splenectomy. He was extremely anemic, had to have blood transfusions before/during the surgery, but overall it was a success.

Riley came home the next day, even though he was noticeably sore, you could tell he felt better. We had no reason to believe his histopath results were going to be so devastating, the vet said as far as they could tell, all his other organs looked great. Unfortunately, one week after surgery, I got the call. It was bad. Hemangiosarcoma. Riley was officially diagnosed with cancer, and a very aggressive cancer at that. I was devastated, in shock, pissed, all of it. After a day or two of denial, I began my desperate search on the internet for help. Once again, diet was popping up as being the one thing that has proven to help other dogs in these extreme diagnoses.

Fortunately for me, I also stumbled upon Mike’s website-ketopoweredk9.com. FINALLY, someone who can literally walk you through how to feed raw meals to your dog. And not only that, raw meals, catered to your individual dog’s needs, supplements and all. With recipes. AND, has first hand experience & proof that he’s on to something great, with his beautiful pup, Emie’s story. It was exactly what i was looking for. I needed help, and I found it. Hes got so much info on his website, its mind-blowing. With all of the emotions I was going through at the time, the amount of information there is on how to start feeding raw on your own, its astronomical and overwhelming.
Mike takes that stress out of the equation for you. We are SO grateful.

Riley has been on his new Raw Ketogenic Diet for almost a month now and is doing absolutely fantastic! We noticed he seemed to be feeling a little better just after his surgery alone. But since starting him on a Raw properly balanced Ketogenic Diet, hes got a new lease on life. He runs around like he’s a puppy, super excited for walks again, LOVES mealtime, playful with visitors-who comment on what a change they see in his behavior, his coat has even changed-its so soft. You can tell, overall he just feels so much better. And we feel so much better knowing that we are doing everything we possibly can be doing to help him in his situation.

Now more than ever, we cherish each new day we get to spend with Riley. And we too hope he gets to be one of the success stories, just like Emie.”

Jessica-

MY THOUGHTS:

All of Riley’s improvements are “par for the course” so to speak when we start a dog on a properly balanced Raw ketogenic meal plan. Suddenly acting young again, loves the meals, playful, change in coat/fur. You can always tell a raw fed dog or cat just by petting them and running your fingers through their hair. A raw fed animals coat is always a tell tale sign!

And Riley is a PRIME example that it’s NEVER too late to change and improve a dogs diet. A lot of pet owners might be apprehensive about making such drastic changes to a 13 year old dogs diet, but Jessica made that drastic change and improvements followed.

Mikey

Previously suffering with recurring MCT cancer before starting a Raw Ketogenic Diet
Mikey had a total of 4 MCTs removed before starting Keto

mikeyMicheleForan

UPDATE FROM MIKEY’S OWNER AFTER BEING ON KETOPOWEREDK9’S MEAL PLAN FOR 2 YEARS AND COUNTING:

“Mikey’s Journey”

My Boston Terrier Mikey had been plagued with MCTs since he was 4 and has had multiple surgeries for MCTs over the years. After the last surgery, my vet gave me the name of an oncologist and said Mikey would probably need chemo. I was determined to find a way to prevent anymore surgeries for Mikey and keep any lurking cancer from popping up.  I was not going to accept chemo as an option.

I don’t remember how I found Mike at KetoPoweredK9 but I am so glad I did.  When I learned he had meal plans for dogs geared toward their specific cancer needs I ordered a raw keto meal plan for Mikey.  He loves it and I have the peace of mind knowing that he is not missing anything essential for his health.  It would have taken me years to figure out a meal plan like this.

Since feeding Mikey the raw keto meal plan I have noticed his energy has increased tremendously, he lost the weight he needed to lose (which is important to fight cancer) and he is a happier dog all around.

But the most important thing is that he has not had any more MCTs for the past two years at each of his six-month checkups.  My veterinarian is always pleased that there are no signs of cancer and Mikey’s blood work is perfect. At his most recent six-month checkup my veterinarian said “I don’t know what you are doing but keep doing it.”
My Mikey is now 13.

MY THOUGHTS:
Time and time again we see great success stories like these when the owner takes the initiative to change their dogs diet in radical ways and making the commitment to stick with it. Prior to starting Keto Mikey was plagued with MCT (mast cell tumor/Cancer) coming back again and again over the course of his life.
Mikey’s owner has stuck with a very strict home prepared Raw Ketogenic diet for just over 2 years now (as of June 2021) and Mikey has responded brilliantly to it.
Keep up the great work with Mikey!

Luna

Was suffering from Allergies/skin irritation/rashes

Luna was suffering from itchy red rashes all over her body before we started her on a Raw Ketogenic diet, the improvements started happening very quickly.

Rooster

Roosters original bio from 2019 can be read further down the page below, this is just an update as of 5/23/2021
picture of dog living with cancer

Update from Roosters owner 5/21/2021:
““Rooster was diagnosed with metastatic histiocytic sarcoma at just 6 years old in January 2018. He had two distinct large masses in his abdomen. Our veterinarian told us surgery was not an option and there wasn’t a viable chemotherapy option. They gave him less than two months to live. We switched Rooster to a ketogenic diet as soon as we did a little dietary research. It was very difficult at first, trying to keep up with weight changes, picky protein eating and ketosis, but Rooster’s tumors began to shrink. A second opinion set us up for a well-rounded, multi-angled attack with chemo, Chinese herbs, mushrooms and turmeric paste, joined together with a whole new approach to feeding. As we backed off the chemo, we were stunned at how much the tumors continued to shrink. The diet was working! Within a year, the tumors were completely gone! Rooster has been cancer-free since March 2019 and will celebrate his 10th birthday in August (2021)! We don’t want to rock the boat or change a thing, so Mike helped us balance his long-term keto diet with critical vitamins, minerals and amino acid supplements. Mike’s help and this diet made all the difference in Rooster’s cancer fight. It is still hard work, but worth the effort in every way. With gratitude, Meghan, Marcus & Rooster Hodge (& fur-sister Roxie, too)
My thoughts: Now imagine if Roosters owner just went home that dreadful day in 2018 and just threw her hands up in defeat because of that prognosis and started feeding Rooster pup-cups from Starbucks and big old bags of ol’roy dog treats. We’d expect an entirely different outcome.
Never give up

Kane
kane

From Kanes owner 2/13/2021:
This is Kane. He is a 5 year old Rottweiler, who was diagnosed with Lymphosarcoma on December 28th, 2020.  I politely told him (my vet) that I did not wish to do chemo and that I’d like to try a more natural approach. He already knew how I felt about steroids, but suggested that since not going the chemo route, that we give him an injection of a steroid and a prescription of prednisone (another steroid).  I was still not happy with having him on prednisone, I started immediately and removed Kane from kibble and I continued to do my own research. I came across a video of KetoPet Sanctuary. I had heard of humans being on a Keto diet and have a sister that is, but never heard of this for DOGS!
By this time, Kane was hungry and thirsty all the time, because of the prednisone. That was it, though! He had no energy and was simply existing! I wasn’t seeing ANY improvements. I wasn’t expecting a miracle, but I was hoping to see some progress. I continued my research and joined Ketogenic Dog Group. THAT was the game changer!!!! I was reading the success stories and felt a spark of HOPE! I needed help quickly! I decided to purchase the 2 meal plan from Mike, and started right away.
I had taken Kane back in for a recheck and to speak with the vet about weaning Kane off of the prednisone. He gave me the protocol for doing that safely, and agreed that the Keto option was probably best suited. He just didn’t know enough about it.
Here we are on week 2 of this Keto journey and Kane is thriving! He was showing MASSIVE improvements within a couple of days!!! I’ve still got some homework to do, as far as checking his glucose/ketone levels, but I am beyond impressed with the results thus far! He went from “eat…drink water…drink more water…sleep…repeat” to wanting to PLAY! I remember the first time I prepared his meal, I thought “oh my goodness, he’s going to starve”. I was pleasantly surprised at how well he adjusted, and is seemingly fulfilled with his meals!
Mike is AMAZING to work with!!! He is very detailed and always willing to answer your questions! I have told so many people about this process. I can not express the gratitude I have for him! As I stated to a friend, “it’s like someone has studied for the test FOR YOU, given you the answers, and all YOU have to do, is take the test and apply the answers”! There is a LOT of information to go through. Do not feel overwhelmed. It will all start making sense, and the results you see will motivate you to keep going!
We are still early on this journey, but I haven’t felt this much optimism since his diagnosis! I hope his story gives anyone that was in my position the hope and optimism they are so desperately seeking!

My Thoughts: Time and time again, when these dogs are taken off kibble and started on a Raw ketogenic diet, we see these kinds of drastic improvements very quickly. And as it was pointed out, when the first meal was prepared they were shocked at how little food there was to feed, and that is because on a high fat ketogenic diet the meal is MUCH more calorically dense. We are packing in almost double the calories as a standard raw diet. So we can feed LESS food but still be feeding the same amount of calories. Whats disheartening to think, is ALL of the dogs that are out there dealing with cancer but yet mainstream veterinary care refuses to accept that a dog with cancer can thrive on a Raw Ketogenic diet. This is what the animal needs! proper RAW nutrition.

Diesel

118761370_2618290321751999_8434551943435528135_n

Diesel was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma back in August of 2019. Opted for amputation, chemo, immunotherapy and Diesel’s owners contacted me to get a custom balanced Raw Ketogenic Diet started for him using my program.

8/31/2020 : From Diesels owner: “Just wanted to give you an update. Diesel is doing great! His oncologist is very pleased with how he looks. His last oncology appt was the 12th of August 2020, and she seemed a little surprised to be honest. (original prognosis was 10-12 months at BEST)
Diesel is maintaining his weight. He’s eating 75-80% of meals (only less than 100% on the day after oral chemo which is every other day). His
energy is great. His coat looks fantastic. No sign of Metastasis to his lungs. I asked the doctor if she ever gets to use “remission.” I spoke candidly with her reminding her of the statistics that she had quoted me at his first appointment. She said that he is definitely in surgical remission for osteosarcoma but that he has to reach the 2-year mark before she will say full remission. We are now at 1 year since symptoms began. We are so blessed to have had this extra time with him and continue to love on him from day to day. 🐾

Thank you for all your help with his diet. And for answering all 1,342 of my questions. Thank you Mike, I’m so glad we kept trying with the diet. It took a solid 4 months. The green lipped muscle powder helps.

My thoughts: Phenomenal that Diesel is able to live a great quality of life that he is living! We’ve seen it time and time again when the diet is changed and the diet is done right, powerful things can happen. It’s not always easy to stay committed to feeding a Raw Home prepared keto diet. But it pays off and Diesel is a shining example of just that!

Tina

tina

Nov- 2020
From Tina’s Owner:
“This month marks six months post diagnosis! She was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of mammary gland cancer and I was told she had 3-6 months to live if I chose not to do any chemo. Here she is from a few days ago on our walks/ball fetching. She has more energy than ever before and seems to be doing great! I don’t think this would have been possible without” ketopoweredK9’s program. “I started her on keto the day after she was diagnosed and purchased a recipe from Mike a few days later and he had it to me ASAP”.

Lucy

From Lucy’s owner:
I want to share Lucy’s story with you, and what a ketogenic diet has done for her, in case anyone is scared of switching up their dog’s diet.
June 11th Lucy had a biopsy on her mouth due to a swollen jaw. (See picture below, taken April 18). Although we did not know what the biopsy would tell us, the vet had shared that he had a good feeling it was an oral melanoma, and that the x rays showed she was suffering from severe degenerative joints in her hips and spine. That car ride home, I made the decision that I was switching Lucy to a full on ketogenic diet. My husband and I started our personal ketogenic diet almost a year ago, and we know what it did for us, so my thinking was “how could it not help Lucy, if anything, her aches and pains of degeneration.”
June 25th we got the news that Lucy had lymphoma. Devastated because surgery was no longer an option to remove the tumor.
Off to the Oncologist on July 7, and Lucy was officially diagnosed with T-cell cutaneous epitheliotropic lymphoma, stage 5. Prognosis was not good, and our oncologist suggested CCNU chemo treatments, but warned that the success rates were not that great for Lucy’s type of lymphoma, and with Lucy’s age and other ailments, it could cause other issues, like liver or kidney disease. He also suggested prednisone as an alternative to slow the growth of the current tumor and future tumors.
By this time (July 7) Lucy had already been on Keto for 3.5 weeks and I was seeing a huge difference in her. The swelling in her mouth had really decreased, and she was doing the stairs again. We opted to continue with the Keto diet, and said we could consider the prednisone but were not willing to make any decisions about that. We wanted to do our own research on it and how it could affect Lucy. On July 15th I picked up a prescription for prednisone and we started her on it on July 16th, and the results and our experience have been positive.
At that time, our main short-term goal was to do everything we can to keep Lucy with us through August. See, Lucy has always loved going on fishing trips. She loves to fish, ride on the boat, and just be by the water. She’s always the first one on the boat in the morning and often wakes me up early to go early morning (before golden hour) fishing. She loves that time on the water, and we planned a week in August to take her on one last fishing trip, making it the best one yet.
After doing research on keto for dogs, the thing I worried about most was making sure she was getting the vitamins and minerals she would need. The basic keto diet we started her on had great success, but I knew we needed to add in the vitamins and minerals, so we reached to Mike and purchased one of his plans. I now feel better knowing Lucy now is getting everything she needs, and the best part, I continue to see amazing changes. The tumor continues to shrink, the mouth isn’t nearly as inflamed, and she not only is she running up and down the stairs, she is jumping on the couch and our bed! She hadn’t been doing those things for such a long time. She has her PUPSTEP back.
We believe in the raw ketogenic diet for dogs, the proof is living with us. I no longer worry about our short-term goal, instead I find myself thinking, about planning another fishing trip for late September or October. I fully believe that Lucy will beat the odds, and we will have months if not years to still love her and spoil her rotten. She just celebrated her 12th birthday on Friday, and I’m hoping for 13!
To Mike, THANK YOU. I can’t tell you how happy I was to come across your site and find someone who could help us fill in the vitamin and mineral gaps needed in Lucy’s diet. The best part… Lucy loves it and gobbles it up.
See the photos below of Lucy’s tumor and the differences. We take weekly progression photos.

Levi

“Levi is on a keto diet designed by Mike Battaglia at (ketopoweredk9)…. has reduced his seizure frequency significantly.”

yvonne lord

June 2020-

Levi started having seizures at just 2.5 years old. After traditional treatments of phenobarbital and CBD weren’t working to stop the seizures, Levi’s owner reached out for help designing a balanced Raw Ketogenic diet. After acclimating to the Balanced Raw Ketogenic diet, Levi’s seizures have since stopped. Time will tell if Levi has any more episodes, but as of right now Levi’s owner is optimistic that we’ve been able to hold them at bay with the diet.  As I write this post, Levi is at about 10 weeks without having any seizures.
I will keep this page updated with Levi’s progress as time goes on!

what Levi’s owner has to say :
My Levi started having seizures. He’s an 8 lb Japanese Chin cross and he is my rally obedience star. He loves to train. But at just about 2.5 years of age he had his first seizure. then 6 months later, another, quite long. Then they started coming every 2 months …then monthly. We put him on phenobarbital ( regular vet) plus CBD oil (holistic vet) … back to 2 months for another half year. and then a series in November and December of 2019. In January of 2020, he went onto the ketopet diet and things calmed down a bit… I got him onto a diet designed by Mike at KetopoweredK9 by the first week of February. He had 2 seizures in March… another in April… and the he went 8 weeks without a seizure. I am thinking that it took some time for the keto process to affect whatever causes his seizures, but the long times between the last 2 seizures have me hopeful that we have at least arrested the increasing frequency of seizures.
Thank you for your help and for designing that diet for him”

My thoughts: Although Levi started on a basic unbalanced version of a ketogenic diet back in January and still had some episodes, I would account this to the fact that the Keto diet he was started on back then was too low of a ratio at just 1:1, After Levi’s owner contacted me to get a properly balanced Raw Ketogenic meal plan together, we got a plan going to increase the ketogenic ratio to a higher fat 2:1 ratio and after Levi had time to acclimate to that new diet is when we began to see the changes and subsequently began to see the seizures stop.  This is a perfect example of how not all ketogenic diets are the same, how they can be specific to the ailment. And a great example of an owners perseverance to keep on trying

Nico

nico Anne Chen osteosarcoma

UPDATE:
March 2022 : ” Nico is now 2 years beyond her cancer diagnosis and thriving on her custom keto diet. There is no sign of the cancer that was threatening her. She is still very active and approaching her 15th birthday. Thank you so much for your part in her recovery.”
MAY 2021: NICO’S OWNER REPORTS THAT SHE IS STILL DOING WELL !

Nico is a 13 year old pit bull mix Diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in Feb of 2020, When her owner came to me for help formulating a balanced ketogenic Meal for Nico she reported that Nico used to be fairly active but since the Osteosarcoma Diagnosis she was forced to take Nico on shorter walks and generally was less active. We started Nico on a balanced Raw Ketogenic Diet, 2:1 ratio shortly after the initial diagnosis. Here’s what Nico’ owner has to say a few months later after implementing the Raw Ketogenic diet.

“My 13 year old pup Nico was diagnosed with osteosarcoma after an xray confirmed that as the reason for her pronounced limp. As she is very fearful of the vet, amputation and chemotherapy would not have been a good option for her. I started her on a 2:1 recipe provided by Mike very soon after. In three weeks, the large bump in her shoulder had almost disappeared (it’s still there but you have to know it is there to see it) and the limp is gone. She loves the raw keto diet and licks her bowl clean. It has been 3 1/2 months since her diagnosis (in February 2020) and she is running and staying active. She continues to enjoy her walks and hikes and I am just so thrilled with what really seems to be her general good health and the positive response to the keto diet. Thank you so much!!!”

My thoughts:

Nico was eating a highly processed diet of kibble prior to starting the Raw Ketogenic Diet. Stories like this are not uncommon for us to see remarkable results of improved health in a very short time. When the body has the right food it needs, we can see vast improvements in the dogs health!

You may recognize Robert from his many TV appearances as a well known dog trainer.
What Robert has to say about the meal plan service from KetoPoweredk9:
“I was referred to Mike by Daniel Orrego from Keto Pet. After years of feeding my dog everything from home cooked meals, kibble, raw and just about everything in between, I was in search of the healthiest food possible. I understood that just feeding meat and veggies is not balanced and the risks of feeding kibble became mind boggling. Finding someone who understands nutrition and that can customize a diet plan for a specific dog, health concern was amazing. I LOVE Mike’s attention to detail and his guidance. Everything from the recipe, nutritional info, a website filled with links to purchase and support made Mike the ONE place to go for my dog’s dietary needs. I highly recommend Mike to anyone who wants to do what’s best for their dog(s) when it comes to food. This is a one stop / everything you need guy that I trust with my dog’s health. If you love your dog and want what’s best for him in the line of nutrition, see Mike!”

Mya

My Best Girl Mya Living Her Best Life About 2 years after a delicate kidney removal surgery due to a severe abscess, my 11-year old Shiba Inu, Mya, had to go through another surgery. We thought the abscess had come back but after the 4-hour surgery our vet reported that it was, in fact, a suspicious looking tumor with blood vessels and 2 legs and some adhesions. It was later diagnosed as transitional cell carcinoma. I was racing against time. Having been a follower of Dr. Karen Becker and Rodney Habib and also the work of Ketopet Sanctuary, putting Mya in ketosis was an absolute must. It would have taken me a month or two or even more to learn how to make a balanced keto meal plan without any guidance and that would have taken away so much precious time that I could be spending with my pup and researching on her condition. I am extremely blessed to have bumped into Mike Battaglia early on in this battle. He was quick to reply and was thorough throughout the process. Within 2 days, I had a meal plan for Mya and a grocery list for her supplements and tutorials and videos on how to make things easier. Let’s just say, Mya’s transition into ketosis was smooth and has been in ketosis since then. Five and a half months into the diet, along with supplementation, metabolic conditioning, essential oils, homeopathy, and recently, ozone therapy, her nodules have not increased in size and number. The best part of it is that Mya has renewed energy. She moves as though she is a little pup. She is back doing zoomies, invites other dogs to play with her and digs into her toy basket to pick her toy of the day. My best girl Mya is living her best life. Thank you, Mike, for being an integral part of my tool chest for Mya’s care.

Phani

Oct.29 2019  “While he calculated dosages of vitamins and minerals, as well as, balanced a menu of macronutrients, I got to spend precious time with our special little Jack Russell struggling with her cancer”

I Asked for a Miracle
I asked the universe for a miracle.  I asked for the gift of time. After a recent visit to our veterinarian, I received the news that our 15, year old Jack Russell had only 2 – 3 months to survive her diagnosed mammary cancer.  The news literally knocked “the wind out of my sail.” I was also informed that she had a heart condition that would make surgery too risky.  Receiving this news was devastating.  I knew, immediately, that I would have to fight with all our might to make sure these last days would be her best and most memorable days.  She was weak and beginning to fade quickly.  This is when I made my intentions clear to the powers that be.  I asked for time, so that she could live these last days with happiness and without fear – to have the opportunity to share the love that we felt for one another just the way we wanted to.
As I scoured the internet, read, researched resources, deliberated on treatments, examined diets, and made phone calls throughout Canada and the United States, recognizing that time was short for any kind of resolve, something inside of me knew that there would be answers and to persist.  In the interim, I asked myself what would inspire my beautiful little girl that once was full of life and sparkle.  Too weak and exhausted, her enthusiasm for walks and hunting had waned.  Instead, my spouse and I decided to bundle her up and went for “car walks” of the paths and trails that she once traveled on her own steam.  She welcomed these moments reflecting on her past.  And while she slept long hours, I continued my research.Within days, I learned about the Keto Sanctuary, made several calls and discovered the Keto Diet.  Hope is all part of the gift of time.  I immediately put her on the Keto Sanctuary diet and, acknowledging that I had very little understanding of the science behind this way of eating, decided that I, too, must live this diet if I were to fully understand it.  I began wondering: “What might be too much fat?  How did I feel? How might she feel?  How could I better understand her new experience of eating?”  At the onset of this diet, I was concerned about the lack of supplementation.  A few, more calls and, as the universe would have it, I was directed towards a man called Mike Battaglia of KetopoweredK9. I was told that if anyone knew supplements, the keto diet and experienced cancer with his own pet, he would be my best resource.  It has been an absolute blessing – the miracle that I had asked for.  Life is filled with many intentions.  There are no coincidences in life.
Although it was all by e-mail, I felt an immediate connection with Mike.  Completely overwhelmed about the Keto diet, I was directed to his Facebook group, and his website, which had all of the information that I needed.  Furthermore, my anxiety about constructing a diet, which I had so little knowledge about and so little time to learn about, had dissipated.  He was our angel sent to us from heaven.  Not only did his service prepare Phani’s menu, which incorporated the necessary macronutrients (fat, protein and carbohydrates), but, he included the necessary vitamins and mineral proportions and dosage calculations necessary to support better good health for her.  Mike’s service includes a wealth of information on his website to assist us in understanding the ketogenic diet, as well as, the role ketones play in our effort to stop cancer from progressing (or even disappearing).  His tutorials were a valuable instructional tool and a time-saver in my haste to plan these important meals.  In addition, the tutorials developed a deeper understanding of the many complexities involved in menu planning.
I appreciated Mike’s continuous support and quick response to my many queries.  This has been a stressful time in our lives, not only to manage Phani’s illness, but, to embrace new learning.  I am truly grateful for Mike’s knowledge, expertise and patience in a time of great need.  It would have been an impossible task for me to endeavor as I travel this new journey on my own.  Throughout this experience, it was evident, to me that Mike is passionate and committed to making a difference in pet’s lives and ensured good health.  He imparts new ways for healthy living, not just for our “furry” friends, but for humans as well.
Mike took the” guess-work” out of formulating a ketogenic diet for Phani.  Patiently, he supported us during a difficult time in our lives by continuously educating, teaching and informing.  He was quick to respond to queries of “why” and “why not” by giving explanations in a language that was understandable.  Not only was his knowledge and expertise graciously embraced, but I could sense his desire to make a difference to healthy eating and living for all pets.  His commitment to contribute to this knowledge positively impacts all animals for a better lifestyle.  If it were not his compassion, I would not have been given the gift of time.  While he calculated dosages of vitamins and minerals, as well as, balanced a menu of macronutrients, I got to spend precious time with our special little Jack Russell struggling with her cancer.
Two short weeks later, Phani has shown marked improvement.  Her zest for life and happy disposition has returned.  I am happy to say that her tumor on her left chest has disappeared and the tumor in her mammary gland has decreased significantly.  Not only does she look forward to her daily “car walks, “ but now participates in walks and runs in the park again.  Her playfulness and energetic self has returned as, she enthusiastically looks forward to each new day rejuvenating in her better health.
I asked for a miracle.  I asked for the gift of time.  The universe directed me to Mike Battaglia who gave Phani and our family another opportunity to live life well and in good health.  Phani may have 3 months, or 6 months, a year or a few years.  One thing for sure, we have a whole new appreciation and a better understanding for the gift of time.  It is the small, little moments that are important to us now.  Each moment gives us an opportunity to love well and embrace our friendship well.  These are the moments that matter – where love and friendship prevail.  Thank you, Mike for making this possible.

Isis

isis2

From Isis’ Owner 9/21/19
“My dog, Isis was officially diagnosed with cardiac hemangiosarcoma (HSA) cancer on August 1st, 2019 when her cardiologist saw via an X-ray she was suffering from pericardial effusion and a tumor on her heart. He drained her pericardial sac and took a biopsy of the tumor simultaneously. He told me she has 4-6 weeks to live and was pushing me to euthanize her immediately to put her out of her misery. It was bad enough I had to digest that my 8 year best friend had cancer, this jerk of a cardiologist was presenting the only option is to put her down. Isis was having bleeds since May 2019 and no one suspected cancer. After complaining about her having a periodic pot belly, blowing up like a watermelon, and being disoriented several times to the emergency animal hospital and her regular Vet, they would see only see on the bloodwork that she was anemic, do a blood transfusion and send her home. All the while, she has been dealing with cancer and it took a callous cardiologist to discover it. I was devastated but knew I only had 4-6 weeks. I wasn’t going to let my best friend go down without a fight. I quickly found an Oncologist and an Integrative Vet and then desperately searched for appropriate diets for cancer. I stumbled across Keto Pet Sanctuary and immediately purchase the ketogenic patties and a jar of coconut oil. The Oncologist found another HSA tumor on her spleen and recommended five IV chemo treatments along with low dose metronomic chemo. The Integrative Vet recommended aquapuncture/acupuncture, Chinese herbs, therapeutic mushrooms, CBD Oil, along with b12/vitamin C shots. I was feeling good about everything except the keto patties/coconut oil. Suddenly, I stumbled across Mike Battaglia and his Ketogenic Dog Group on Facebook on August 13th. I immediately thought this was my saving grace. With the wealth of knowledge Mike provided which was at my disposal anytime, I learned more about Keto and cancer and knew this was going to be instrumental in Isis beating HSA. I was quickly calculating her diet and it was much more nutritional then the patties. Mike even customized a diet for her which was even better. In just seven short weeks, Isis had 3 IV chemo treatments, 3 acupuncture/aquapuncture treatments/b12 and vitamin c shots, daily metronomic chemo, followed the regimen the Integrative Vet recommended and was on the Ketogenic Diet and a more robust Keto diet by Mike Battaglia, the HSA tumors are no longer visible on an ultrasound. The Oncologist is convinced it is the Ketogenic Diet that forced HSA to retreat since this type of cancer doesn’t respond to chemo. Isis’ siblings, Bandit, Kira, Cinnamon, my son and I are grateful to the Ketogenic Diet and Mike Battaglia’s knowledge for saving my best friend and four-legged beloved family member.”

ROOSTER

meghanDroosterbday

From Rooster’s Owner: 8/19/19
Rooster was diagnosed with metastatic histiocytic sarcoma at just 6 years old in January 2018. He had two distinct large masses in his abdomen. Our veterinarian told us surgery was not an option and there wasn’t a viable chemotherapy option. They put him on prednisone and we were told to keep him comfortable for the two weeks to two months he had left. We frantically searched for holistic and dietary options, in addition to, a second opinion. We switched Rooster to a ketogenic diet as soon as we did a little Keto Pet Sanctuary research. Luckily, we found Mike Battaglia and his Ketogenic Dog Group on FaceBook to help us with the math! It was very difficult at first, trying to keep up with weight changes and ketosis, but Rooster’s weight began to level off and the tumors began to shrink dramatically. We found an oncologist who ditched the steroids and did recommend a low-dose, generic chemo. We now had a well-rounded, multi-angled attack with western medicine, Chinese herbs, mushrooms and turmeric paste, joined together with a whole new approach to feeding. We spaced out and backed off the chemo, but the tumors continued to shrink. His weight completely stabilized and he still had tremendous energy for long outdoor walks. He could easily knock out 7 to 9 miles a day! One year after the dismal diagnosis and with no more chemo, there was no sign of the tumors. Fourteen months later, an ultrasound showed a completely healthy 7-year old dog. Once we were feeding keto long-term, Mike helped us balance his diet out with critical vitamins, minerals and amino acid supplements. This diet has made all the difference in Rooster’s cancer fight. It is still hard work, but worth the effort in every way. On August 16, 2019, Rooster celebrated his 8th birthday cancer-free, almost 19 months after we were told he only had several weeks to live. With gratitude, Meghan, Marcus & Rooster Hodge (his fur-brother Remi & fur-sister Roxie, too)”

Marley

Marley

8/20/2019
From Marley’s Owner:
My dog Marley was diagnosed in May of 2017 with lymphoma. Her original prognosis by her vet was 6-8 months with chemo, 6-8 weeks without and statistics say that most dogs don’t achieve a second or third remission.
I was devastated with the diagnosis. My world was turned upside down and Marley was only 8 years old. I thought how could this be? I started doing some research on the web of what I could do and Immediately took her off crap kibble and put her on a raw diet at that point. She went through 6 months of chemotherapy and We got about 6 months free remission (without chemo) and the cancer came back. At that point I started doing more research and had come across Ketopet sanctuary and Mike Battaglia’s ketogenic dog group on Facebook and they have been life savers. At that time in June of 2018 I started the Raw Ketogenic diet for Marley and immediately saw her with more energy than before it’s like she wasn’t feeling sick. After finishing Chemotherapy, the second time, we got about 6 months of remission. She is back in remission (as of 8/20/19’) and about to finish chemo therapy in 3 weeks. I’ve been giving her coconut oil as the fat source which has the highest levels of MCTs (medium chain triglycerides) and her blood glucose levels are normally around 40-60 mg/dl (Standard diet kibble fed dogs are often over 100 mg/dl)
I feel now what I know that this cancer is never coming back EVER! Thanks to the Ketogenic Diet and Mike Battaglia’s expertise.
-oct. 31st 2019 update from Marley’s owner: Hey Mike I just wanted to say Marley’s coat has never looked or felt better.
